The Young Roots programme is an innovative project to capture the oral history of the YMCA one of Scotland’s oldest youth organisations. Sharing the Past to Shape the Future uses an inter-generational approach, led by our young people from YMCAs across Scotland, capturing oral histories from across the nation.
Gatehouse of Fleet YMCA, or The Drop In Centre as it is known locally, is a vibrant youth facility where local young people regularly meet their friends, play pool, mix music, surf the net and take part in a variety of exciting activities or trips.
The Drop In Centre was purchased in 2000 with the help of funding from the National Lottery. This fantastic injection of cash enabled the purchase and refurbish of a derelict workshop in Digby Street and for state of the art equipment to be installed for the use of all young people in the town. The young people can join the Drop In Centre at the age of 13 or when they start at the local high school. A qualified part time youth worker runs the three evening sessions per week and has a team of dedicated volunteer youth workers who regularly assist.
