YMCA Scotland Leadership Academy10 October 2014
It is so important for us to invest in the future leadership of the YMCA movement but beyond that reason our passion as a youth work organisation is to see young people not only stand on their feet but achieve their fullest potential in life.
For YMCA this often means creating opportunity for leadership and as part of a worldwide organisation with 45 million members we can create some amazing opportunities!
In 2014 young Scottish leaders led programme and participated in training in Norway, in the Czech Republic, in the USA, in Switzerland and in Sierra Leone. Two YMCA leaders joined with 220 others from all over the world to train and learn and lead programme, another spent three months working with the World YMCA in Geneva.
“World Council was mindblowing! A fantastic opportunity to, again, step back and celebrate being part of such a global organisation and see the impact of the YMCA in the 83 countries represented. As a young leader to recognise the importance of the role that young people play at this level around the world was inspiring and to have such a huge involvement myself was humbling.”
Hayley, YMCA Edinburgh
We held a graduation from our International Leaders Programme in October this year. This programme invests in young staff who have potential to be our senior leaders of the future. They serve on national committees and work on tasking with the national staff team. Two of our graduates now sit on our National Executive committee.
“In 2014 YMCA invested in over 600 young leaders across Scotland”
Back in Scotland local YMCAs are always spotting potential and creating opportunity for personal growth and leadership. In March 2014 our young leaders organised the first ever National Youth Assembly that was a huge success, was full to bursting and which inspired a whole new generation of leaders.
“they are taking the movement by storm and we just love it!”
In October the class of 2014 graduated from our Full Board trustee training programme. This offers training to young leaders to sit on our local Boards of Management and is accredited at SCQF Level 5. We are now recruiting a new intake of young trustees.
YMCA Scotland is also investing in training youth workers through the PDA in Christian youth work which is accredited at SCQF Level 6 and which is currently running intakes in the central belt and in the west of Scotland.
“Being a young leader in the YMCA has allowed me a space to grow that I’ve never had before. The opportunities I’ve had have been amazing, pushing me out of my comfort zone and always being challenged in a new way!”
Emma, YMCA Perth
We are excited about the drive of our young leaders across the YMCA today. VOICE, our National Youth Forum is shaping and changing our movement; they are taking the movement by storm and we just love it!
